We live in NJ…Recommend when to plant, how far apart, will they multiple over time?

Marianne's Response
In your area, wait until danger of frost is past such as mid May to plant gladiola corms into the soil. Make sure the soil drains well and the location is in full sun. Plant the corms three times deeper than their width and space them 8 to 12 inches apart. They will reproduce over time but only if you lift them at the end of the season in late fall and store the corms in a cool dry spot. Then you will need to replant them each spring. An easier to grow summer blooming bulb in your area would be crocosmia. The flowers are not as showy as glads but the hummingbirds love the bright orange or red blooms and they are much hardier flowering corms/bulbs for cold winter areas. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
