Some rhododendrons can be pruned within one foot from the ground and come back with new growth that will form a new shrub and begin blooming again in about three years. This severe hatchet type of flowering can be avoided however if you prune back one third of the shrub after it blooms then a second third the next year and the last third the following year. This way your rhododendron will gradually be shortened and still give you flowers every year. A more practical approach is to just move your overgrown rhododendron to a new location and let it grow as large as nature intended. Replace tall rhodies with more compact varieties such as the Yak or PJM rhododendrons and stop fighting Mother Nature. Keep growing - but not giant rhodies that need pruning, Marianne Binetti
