Stop wasting seeds! Make your own seed tape.
Dear Marianne,
Every gardening book recommends planting a lot of seeds close together and then thinning them out later. Isn’t this a waste of seed? Is it okay to just space them out to begin with, especially with new and large seeds like beans which almost always germinate? I might plant more closely if I had really old seeds.

P.S. Thanks for the advice about the evergreens – they survived the winter under the snow. I dug them out when it started to melt and they have sprung back to their original shape.

I agree with you! I just did a TV segment on how to make your own seed tape - put a dot of paste on a length of toilet tissue at the correct spacing for the seeds. Then you can roll and store the seed tape and unwind it into a shallow trench in the soil at planting time. There is not great advantage to planting seeds too close together and sometimes thinning will disturb the roots of the seeds you want to keep. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
