Marianne's Response
Moss is becoming somewhat popular as a plant both in the form of moss lawns and as smaller moss gardens. Encourage moss by not feeding (moss grows best in infertile soil) keeping the soil moist, do not let lime or wood ashes into the area (moss needs an acidic soil) and hand pull any grasses or weeds. Moss gardening also is best done in shaded areas. You can collect interesting moss cushions or sections from rocks, trees or pavement but they will want to grow on the same type of surface that you removed them from. Moss gardens can also be grown indoors in a terrarium. For more detailed information including the different types of mosses, visit your local library or go online and check out the newest books on moss gardening. There are many titles now available. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
