Growing Red Fountain Grass
Hi Marianne,
I recently purchased a Red Fountain Grass at my local nursery and I realize it is considered an annual in my 8B planting zone, but would like to try and save it for future enjoyment. I read where it should be cut back to 6″-12″ late fall, early winter. Was wondering if I piled leaves or pine needles over it would it survive? Or should I put it in a med-large pot and place it in my greenhouse that is lightly heated? What would you suggest? It’s absolutely gorgeous.

This lovely tender grass will need protection from hard frost if you want it to survive in your part of the country as you do get hard frosts. If you have a greenhouse then placing it in a container and wintering it over in an area that will not freeze is a good strategy to keeping your Fountain Grass flowing and growing for next summer.
