Swiss Chard is among the easiest to grow veggies if you understand one thing: This crop needs cool weather. Plant seeds directly in the ground in early spring when you see daffodils blooming. Start harvesting outer leaves when they are the size you want to eat - very small for salads larger for cooking. Shade the plants in summer or move potted plants to shade or grow in a cool part of the garden. Let plants recharge in the fall then you can continue to harvest leaves a few at a time all winter even if there is some snow on the ground. This leafy green likes a general all purpose plant food but is not considered a heavy feeder. Moist soil and a mulch to keep the soil cool are much appreciated.
