Marianne's Response

Hawthorn

I have a beautiful, healthy hawthorn tree about 30 years old. Every year it is covered with blossoms that last for several weeks. This year leaves are healthy as usual but only one branch blossomed, and the blossoms dried out after a week. Leaves healthy, has not been pruned or fed. No toxins in my yard ever! What could have gone wrong this year?

Marianne's Response

You did not mention where you live but this spring has experienced some very cold, wet weather. The dry blossoms may have been hit by frost or if very wet weather it could be a blight that rotted the blooms. The one branch that flowered was most likely more protected via a wind stream or building nearby. No worries, next year the tree will be back on track - as long as the weather behaves. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
