Hellebore Care

I understand that cutting the leaves of Hellebore in late winter/early spring allows the flowers to be better viewed. At what point, when the new Hellebore leaves begin growing, are the flowers to be cut back…or should the Hellebore flowers remain?

Marianne's Response

Good question. You can cut back the stem and flowers as soon as they fade (usually in May) or if you want new seedlings just leave the faded blooms all summer and seeds will ripen and fall to the ground. Next spring you can transplant these seedlings to pots or move them to other parts of the garden. Always remove any stems and blooms immediately if you see signs of disease such as blackened petals and stems. Keep grooing, Marianne Binetti
