Hellebore Pruning

When is it too soon to prune hellebore foliage? It is mid-September, and I’d like to do this chore sooner, rather than later, as I always seem to forget until the new flowers show up in mid-winter and the weather isn’t the greatest for gardening! I think I may have done this too early last year, as the winter flowers were more sparse than previous years.
Thanks!

Yes! Fall is too early to remove the foliage on your hellebore plants. The longer the plant has leaves the more nutrients the plant can make for those winter hellebore blooms. However I do recommend removing any dead or diseased leaves any time of the year. I also have a hellebore that attracts aphid - no reason why only this one plant gets infested, but I do remove the aphid infested leaves on this one hellebore plant in the fall. Some hellebores have smaller leaves that do not obscure the winter blooms and so they can keep their leaves all year if you do not want to get out there in the winter. I just watch the weather after Christmas and as soon as we have a somewhat mild day I dress for the cold, put down a tarp and get to work. I toss the old leaves on to the tarp so it easy to drag to the compost pile. The cleaned hellebore beds look spectacular and it is worth braving the cold. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
