Marianne's Response

When Is Best Time to Prune Hellebore?

A friend suggested I contact you with this question (I think she has travelled with you). My “gardener” cut a huge hellebore off at ground level mid-August. Will it come back?

Marianne's Response

I am going to go out on an unpruned limb here and say yes, a hellebore pruned to the ground in August will send up new shoots in late winter and still bloom. It is best not to prune back the hellebore foliage until winter or early spring, however. That's because it needs the leaves to make energy for the new blooms of the future. So, next year, no hellebore pruning in summer. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
