Help with Orchids

Do indoor orchids need fertilizer during winter months?

Marianne's Response

Yes, although orchids are not heavy feeders so they do not need monthly fertilizing but like all plants they like access to nutrients when they have a growth spurt. This is why orchids thrive with a slow release plant food like Osmocote. Just apply the granules once every 9 months or so and the nutrients will be released slowly when the plants need it.  Unlike some plants, orchids may bloom during the winter months as the buds can be triggered by temperature change. Winter blooms is one reason I appreciate these exotic houseplants so much. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
