Planters made of metal do become very warm in hot climates. Cacti will thrive as will succulents such as ice plant, sedum Angelina, and hens and chicks. The ivy geranium is another flowering plant that thrives in hot spots. You may also want to consider moving the wheelbarrow to a location where it is shaded from the hot afternoon sun.
