How are these caladiums popping up?

caladiums

I have caladiums popping up where I didn’t plant any bulbs. The Flower beds are a couple of months old and on both sides of the long front walkway to my front door. I did plant some mature caladium plants on both sides. About a month later I planted some bulbs only on one side and they’re starting to come up now. However, some caladiums are coming up where I didn’t plant them. A good distance away and on the side I didn’t plant bulbs. My question is how this is happening? I had bulbs with “babies” attached at the end of the season years ago and were huge-didn’t know they did that. Great soil I guess. I googled my question, the only info I found was why bulbs were not sprouting. I appreciate any info that you can offer. Thank you!

Lucky you! Surprise bulbs are usually the result of squirrels or chipmunks digging then storing the baby bulbs in a new location. Sometimes a bulb can even form from a seed on a faded flower bloom but that can take 3 to 5 years so my guess is thank the squirrels. I would keep planting caladiums in the area as they seem to like it. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
