How Do I Care for a Gift Hydrangea?

I recieved an 8-inch hydrangea in a container. I want to put at my front door.  Should it be replanted in a bigger pot? Need the basics for hydrangea care, please. Help!

I love hydrangeas and give talks about them often. I am pleased to welcome you to becoming a hydrangea parent. The first thing is to see if the area you want to place the plant gets hit by the hot afternoon sun. Hydrangeas like morning and early afternoon sun. But in the hot sun, they can burn. You can transplant your hydrangea into a larger container now or wait until the fall. It will be happy in a container for several years as long as you remember to water. Hydrangeas hate to dry out. Feel the soil with your index finger. Water when dry but do not let the plant sit in drainage water. The hydrangea you have was likely forced into early bloom. This means you may need to clip off some faded flower heads as summer progresses. If you have one of the new "Endless Summer" hydrangeas, you will see new blooms all summer. You might also want to transplant your hydrangea into the ground when it grows too large for the pot. Do not prune it except remove any dead, damaged or diseased branches. Hydrangeas bloom nicely with no extra pruning. As for fertilizing, I use Osmocote Plus in late spring as it begins to leaf out. This feeds the plant all summer. Enjoy your new hydrangea.
