How do I get rid of this vine/weed?

I live in Texas and just noticed this prickly vine-like weed growing under some of our live oak trees. I think it may be called greenbrier? How do I kill this weed without harming the tree or the surrounding grass? Their roots are really deep and hard to get up and even though I’ve pulled some, it’s rapidly spreading. Thank you!!

I am not from your area and not sure of the botanical name of your weed but a local Master Gardener or nursery owner can advice you on the correct identity. Then you can see if it is a weed easily controlled with RoundUp. By using a glysophate weed killer you can get to the root of the weed so it won't come back. Your other option is to cut back the weeds, lay cardboard on top then pile 3 to 4 inches of mulch such as wood chips on top of the cardboard. This smother method keeps out all sunlight so the weed and root eventually dies. Stick with it and you will win the battle of the weed. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
