Marianne's Response
How do I Replant Red Roses?
I have some red roses that I would like to dig up and plant in a different area. They are several years old. Is it dangerous to do this? When would be the best time to do this?

I would not recommend digging and transplanting roses during the summer months. The best time to move roses is when they are dormant in the winter months but when the ground is not frozen. Very early spring is also a good time as long as the roses are not quickly pushing out new leaves. You can cut back the roses to one third their size before you start the transplant operation and water well both before and after the move. If you wait until winter your roses should still give you a great display of blooms even if you prune them back at the time of the transplant. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
