How to Control Mealy Bugs

I live on the beach, and have year round problems with mealy bugs killling the plants on my balcony. I have tried sprays, but they always come back. Is there a systemic or spray that really works?
Thanks

Mealy bugs are tough to control as ants help to move these powdery white insects from plant-to-plant. Washing the crotch of the leaves and undersides with strong jets of water, using an insecticidal soap or stronger chemical such as Orthene will help to keep infestations under control but removing all plants and cleaning the area of all plant debris may be necessary if you want a fresh start. Avoid palms and other potted plants that seem to attract mealy bugs. Ask your neighbors what plants are mealy bug resistant and grow only those plants. Good luck, Marianne Binetti
