How to Grow Fenugreek Indoors

Hi, Marianne! One of our members is having trouble using the site so I am presenting the question on he behalf —

She has been growing fenugreek indoors in a sunny spot. As soon as the seeds sprout and grow about 2 inches, they fall over themselves and over the next sprout. It is impossible to untangle the sprouts and straighten them to grow higher. She wants to do that so she can harvest them when the sprouts produce the wonderfully aromatic leaves for cooking. Any suggestions? Bob Stohler for Shaheda Sultan

Fenugreek is an herb used in Indian cooking with health benefits and a little goes a long way but growing it fresh is a wonderful way to enjoy this herb. It sounds to me like the seedlings are overwatered and planted too close. Sprinkle less seeds on top of the soil so there is one seed per square inch. Keep the soil  barely moist until the seeds sprout green then hold back on most water and do not fertilize. A bright sunny window and a cool room will help the seedlings to grow upright and strong instead of falling over. A room that is too warm will also encourage fast growth that is weak and unable to stand up. In short, your friend is giving the young plants too much kindness and attention. As the days grow longer the plants will be easier to grow as they will get more sunlight. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
