Oh nuts! Squirrels are hard to control but if you don't want to trap them (it may not be legal to trap squirrels in your area) try sprinkling red pepper around the tree and on the blossoms or make a collar from metal to place around the trunk similar to how they keep squirrels from climbing bird feeders.
