How to Plant Naked Lady Bulbs (Amaryllis Belladonna)
How deep do I plant naked lady bulbs? I am planting them in the ground. I’ve read to plant them just so the tops of the bulbs show. The instructions that came with them say to plant them 8-9” deep. Who is correct? There’s a big difference between the suggested planting depth.
Thanking you in advance.

Plant Naked Lady bulbs just below the surface of the soil if you live in a warm climate. This type of amaryllis is native to South America. They are considered drought-tolerant. However, if you live where there are winter frosts, plant the bulbs with just a few inches of soil on top and perhaps a 2-inch-deep mulch on top of the soil so that a freeze does not uproot the bulbs. You can also choose to dig the bulbs up every fall and store them indoors much as you would a dahlia tuber. The wide range of planting advice stems from the fact that gardening is an art, not an exact science. The perfect depth depends not only on your climate but also on the soil texture and the amount of rain or sun the area receives. Most bulbs will easily adapt to planting a bit too deep or too shallow. What they will not adapt to is poorly drained soil, so pick a spot that drains well. Now, you can look forward to the foliage in the spring, followed by the leafless blooms later in the summer. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
