You did mention where you garden but if the ivy died I assume you are up North in a very cold climate. You may want to consider weeping conifers such as hemlock, pine and cedar as evergreens that can handle the cold and snow. Any of the native plants from your area would also be most likely to survive extreme winters. Add boulders to help fill in space and add interest if they would stabilize any slope. Flowering groundcovers such as creeping phlox would add spring color. Look at the death of the ivy as a wonderful opportunity to create a more interesting palette of plant material.
