Marianne's Response
Jack Kramer’s Question
Marianne, as of the beginning of October my Boyne red raspberries have been producing fruit, although they are not fall bearing raspberries. The fruit is coming on canes that grew this summer. This is the first time this has happened in the ten years or so that I’ve been growing this variety. This may have happened because of an especially warm and humid summer. So should I cut back the canes after they are through fruiting or do you recommend leaving them until next summer? Thanks…

Marianne's Response
I recommend you cut back the canes to the ground now. The reason is to avoid disease that can overwinter on old canes. Good fall clean up also includes removing fallen leaves that may have rust or fungal spores and mulching on top of the soil after you prune to seal in any spores from old foliage. Congrats on your double harvest - it was a great year for berries in the NW. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
