Reasons why a Royal Poinciana tree may not bloom

Why is my Royal Poinciana Tree not blooming? For the last two years it has an abundance of green leaves and looks very healthy but hardly any blooms.

Lack of blooms could be for several reason. Not enough sun, a cold spell that damaged buds, lack of water when buds were forming, or soil that is too high in nitrogen and lacking in potassium and phosphorous. Is the tree fully mature? Some trees take 10 to 15 years to support a full canopy of blooms. Do you see trees in your area full of blooms? If so you can rule out weather issues, and you may want to try adding some Osmocote all purpose fertilizer around the tree to make sure it is not lacking an essential nutrient.
