Potted plants need good drainage so first make sure the pot has a drainage hole the size of a quarter for a pot 12 inches tall and several drainage holes for larger pots. You do not need rocks in the bottom for better drainage. Instead use a quality potting soil that contains perlite (look for white bits of rock) so it drains freely. Fill pot half full with potting soil, add plants so they will be at same level as they were growing before, then add more soil around plants and firm with your hands lightly. Water gently to settle soil around roots and add a bit more soil if roots are now exposed to air. During winter or heavy rains move pot under eaves of house to prevent soil compacting.
