The space between the boxwoods
The front on my house faces north and is full on sun nearly all day. I have two space 3 to 4 foot wide where I would like to put a couple bushes with red, purple or white leaves and maybe some flowers. The areas are between smallish boxwoods. I’d like to keep the height around 4 to 5 feet, just at the bottom of porch windows. The background is white lattice. I live in northeast Ohio.

My first thought for this space are the dwarf nandinas a variety with red foliage called \"Seinna\" but perhaps the cold winters would be hard on this lovely foliage plant. A better choice may be the cold hardy and drought resistant barberry called \"Orange rocket\" that grows into a narrow column easy to keep pruned under the windows with barbs to keep the burglars out. There is also a compact barberry with purple leaves and a bright yellow barberry in a dwarf form. All are tough plants with lots of color from the brilliant foliage. Head to the nursery, check out the barberries and good luck!
Keep growing,
