around a Lilac shrub?

Marianne's Response

You can try to pull out a sucker or volunteer from the roots of any plant by digging down to the origin of the sucker and pulling or cutting if from the root. If there are too many you can just let your lilac grow wider and larger and celebrate its' growing enthusiasm. A mulch of wood chips a few inches deep will help to discourage new shoots. Keep growing -but not suckers, Marianne Binetti
