Marianne's Response

Just starting with Succulents

I tried to start the seeds in a pot. Nothing. I wondered do I need to sprout them before planting? Any help would be great! Thank you.

Succulents are best started by cuttings from parent plants and are easy to propagate this way. Snip off a branch or top of a succulent you want to propagate. Remove the lowest leaves exposing a bare stem about two inches in length. Let this cutting sit in the shade for 24 hours. The pot it up in fast draining soil so that the bare stem is in the soil and the top with the foliage is sticking upright. Keep the soil just barely moist. Do not overwater. Roots will form and in a few months you will have a new plant. Staring succulents from seeds is possible but difficult so contacting a succulent society would be a better place to get the nitty gritty on growing succulents from seed.
