Wooden barrels make great planters. To really fill the large space for a sunny area look for the \"Storm\" petunias that can handle wet weather and will spread quickly to overflow the planter. In a shaded site wax begonias and impatiens are two annuals that will create mass blooms. Be sure to use potting soil in at least the top 8 inches of the barrel but you can fill the bottom with empty plastic nursery pots or plastic water bottles. You must fertilize potted plants. I add Osmocote at planting time following the instructions on the label. Check the soil daily and water when the top inch is dry to the touch.
