UV protection for Texas plants

We have problem with gardens burning up around mid-July here in central Texas. A friend says they use a shade cover over their garden and it keeps it from getting so hot in mid summer, therefore keeping plants from dying. My question is how much UV protection would I use to build this cover? We want enough sunlight to grow healthy plants but also want protection from Texas summer heat that usually burns plants up in July. Any opinions or info on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

I will have to plead inexperience and admit I do not know the answer to this question as I have no gardening experience in central Texas. I do know you can buy shade cloth from many garden centers and your local extension agent may be the best source of how much UV protection is needed in your area. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
