Yes, you can prune your maple and early spring is a good time to do this job. I see from the photo that your maple has not yet leafed out so it won't feel a thing if you start pruning now. First use sharp hand pruners and follow the longest branches that spill onto the drive all the way to their source or the spot they attach to a large limb. Cut close to the main branch and try not to leave stumps. Also removing any dead wood and thin any crossing branches. You can also prune from below to remove the lowest branches that touch the ground. Take you time, prune to shape and try to remove less than one third of the branches.
