Marianne's Response

ladyfern’s Question

I have a tree peony about 4 years old and have never pruned. I now mostly have only top growth. When and how do I prune. This spring I see some new growth coming from the base of the plant.

Tree peonies are really shrubs with a woody framework so unlike the herbaceous peonies, they do not need yearly pruning. I would try to stimulate flowers on your lazy peony with a dose of Miracle Grow plant food in May and by using a slow release plant food like Osmocote every spring. Is this plant getting at least a half day of sun? Tree peonies without enough sunlight can support beautiful foliage but no blooms. Hope your peony is singing \"this bud's for you\" soon.
