Marianne's Response

landt316’s Question

My neighbor always plants about 150 impatients in a large bed in front of her house each year. This year something completely wiped them all out to the point where it looks like they were never there….kind of eerie. Any idea what may have caused this? And will she be able to plant impatients there next year?

Marianne's Response

Sounds like the impatiens fungal disease that has been sweeping the country. Some nurseries even decided not to sell impatiens this spring just because of this disease. I do think some disease resistant varieties will be ready by next spring but nobody knows for sure. Be sure to ask your local nursery for the latest update and if you are concerned substitute was begonias or another shade-loving annual instead of the disease prone impatiens.
