Marianne's Response

Did gopher poison ruin my garden?

For the past 2 nights something (rodent) has been eating my new tomato and pepper plants. My #$&$%@# husband went out and put gopher poison around the base of the plants! Yes, he did. The poison has strychnine in it and I told him he ruined the whole garden and now I won’t water it, weed it, harvest it, or eat from it. He says I’m crazy. What do you say?

I agree your hubby went overboard and should not have put poison around edible plants. The entire garden is not ruined however. Use a shovel to carefully remove the soil that is contaminated and dispose of it inside a plastic bag sent away in the garbage. You should also remove the tomato plant. Now you can add some fresh compost or topsoil and replant in that area. Gopher poison should have a label on the package with instructions for use and I do not think it is a systemic poison - one that is sucked up by plants. (But read the package to be sure.) You can replant in the same space and of course always wash your produce and your hands after working in the garden. There is no need to avoid the whole garden and you should enjoy a safe harvest this summer. Most poisons sold for home use to not \"spread\" into other areas or get inside of plants via the roots. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti P.S. You might want to cover the new seedlings with wire cages or clothes until you figure out who has been chomping on them.
