Leeks are members of the onion family and are a very hardy vegetable. You can sow seeds in early spring or young plants can be transplanted into the garden in early summer. They do need deeply dug or loose soil with manure or compost added to get a good crop. Add some Osmocote along the side of your row of leeks in early summer to provide a slow release of nutrients all summer.  Cold weather does not bother leeks so as they mature you can leave them in the ground for harvesting all winter. Be sure to keep weeds away from the young plants and do not crowd your leek seedlings. Space the leek seedlings eight inches apart to  allow the young plants to grow to a mature size. Leeks must have moist soil throughout the summer but if you prepare the soil properly before seeding you should not have much trouble keeping the soil moist enough for a leek harvest in the fall and winter. A mulch of two to three inches in mid summer will help to trap moisture in the soil. I see lots of great leek soup in your future, Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
