Marianne's Response

Is there any way to save my Thundercloud Plum tree that has black knot disease?

My thundercloud plum. This past fall I observed what I later confirmed to be black knot. I was informed by an arborist to prune and ensure that I sanitized the loppers, which I did. It is my understanding that my tree will eventually be taken over and die a slow death…it is sad to hear. I continue to marvel at its lovely spring blooms and enjoy its rich burgundy foliage….my feathered friends that visit and sing from its 10′ height stature will be not as sad as I if she fails. Any systemic Rx possible?

Marianne's Response

My sympathies. I agree with the arborist that the best solution is the shovel solution. Take it out. I would continue to enjoy the tree as long as it blooms in the spring and produces foliage in the summer. You will know when it is time to say goodbye when it no longer creates any beauty in the garden. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
