You can use scissors or your two pinching fingers to snap off the heads of large flowering annuals such as marigolds, geraniums and zinnias or shear back long and leggy bloomers like petunias by removing the top one third of the plant after it flowers. Try to remove the stem as well as the flower head to keep the plant tidy. Some plants like pansies continue to flower for months if you keep deadheading. For roses follow the stem down to where it have a five leaflet joint and cut just above that. For geraniums snap the stem away from the main branch to remove stem and bloom. For fuchsias remove the seed pod just behind the flower as well as the bloom itself. Don't worry, it sounds complicated but is really as simple as cleaning up your flowering plants after they bloom to promote more flowers. Keep growing - and snipping, Marianne Binetti
