A Question About a Magnolia Lily
I bought the Magnolia lily 2 years ago, and it did have a couple of blooms. This year, only a few leaves. I think it’s due to the gale winds (I live in a coastal community) and the cold temperatures. I want to put a Vego 42″ circular raised bed around it. Currently, the pot the shrub is in is 32″ in diameter, with a mesh cover system to protect it from wind and cold. My question is, do you think the shrub might recover if I put that cover system over it?

First, some patience. The few leaves shown in the image you sent may be the first leaves, as more will appear as the weather warms. A newly transplanted shrub will sleep the first year, then creep the second and finally leaf with growth the third year. Since this shrub loses its foliage in the winter, it doesn't require a wind cover in the spring or summer. Nature's protection from wind is provided by plants that have no winter foliage. The leaves appear a bit pale, so perhaps a slow-release plant food, such as Osmocote, applied now in the spring, will help this potted shrub get off to a stronger start. This magnolia will survive winter temperatures higher than -10 degrees, so if you see severe winter weather coming, move the pot into a sheltered location. This magnolia also prefers full sun, so move it to a more sunny location if it receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunshine. Keep the soil moist, but not wet, and ensure the pot has good drainage. In another month (June), you should see larger leaves and by year three, more blooms. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
