Marianne's Response

Make me happy.

Please remind me of the beneficial chemical (?) released when we work the soil. You mentioned this at the Tacoma Garden Show this season. Thank you.

Marianne's Response

Glad you were listening! The name of the bacteria found in soil and on home grown veggies is called Mycobacterium vaccae and you can research several studies that have shown how this bacteria is absorbed when gardening and elevates serotonin or the mood messengers of the brain. More studies show it can help the immune system as well as depression. This helps to explain why "Horticulture Therapy" is being used in mental hospitals, prisons and memory care facilities to get positive results without the use of added medications. Now all of us gardeners know why we just feel better after working in the dirt. Keep growing - and feeling healthy, Marianne Binetti
