Marianne's Response

marnieincosi’s Question

I recently hired a small landscaping company to come prune my apple trees and do general yard clean up. Unfortunately I was not able to be there when they came and they pruned my two hydrangeas down to about two feet! One of them was an old, very large hydrangea, the other was a medium sized bush that was really starting to come into its own. Is there any hope for these bushes or should I just dig them up and start over?

I have good news for you. Both those hydrangeas will not only recover but be in better shape. Early spring is the right time of year to severely prune leaf less shrubs to rejuvenate them. Your hydrangeas may not bloom this summer as they build up strength and many varieties only flower on 2 year old wood.I think you should just set back and wait for the results of this severe pruning. Let us know how many blooms you enjoy two summers from now, Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
