Marianne's Response
marx1187’s Question
I planted petunia seeds this year in baskets and also bought some large petunia baskets. My hope is to have baskets like the ones you see in Sumner maintained by the city, What happens to mine is they seem to grow very good but lanky, then when it rains hard they look awful and never seem to recover. Any suggestions?

Petunias need sun and hate cold nights - but they also need to be fertilized, a lot. The single flower type do better in the rain than the doubles. To keep them from getting lanky fertilize with both a slow release plant food in the soil like Osmocote and a liquid every few weeks like Miracle Grow. Pinch back the tips by one fourth to keep the plants branching and staying full. Don't let the baskets dry out - in warm weather they may need water every morning but if the weather is cool only every 3 to 4 days. You will need to poke your finger down into the soil and water when the top inch feels dry to the touch. You may want to ask who grows the baskets you so admire and find out what variety of petunia they are planting. You may be using a large groundcover petunia like Storm rather than a more compact variety made for baskets. There's a lot to learn when it comes to hanging baskets, but the more you ask, and the more you know the better they grow. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
