Marianne's Response

Leaning roses

We planted roses in containers and they are doing well, however, they are leaning to the side a bit. Can we prune them to make them grow up and taller.
Also, we live in Florida and the soil is very sandy, hence the reason for the containers. Would they be better off in the ground?
Thank you,
Mae Beaton

Marianne's Response

I suspect your roses are just leaning toward the sunlight. Since they are in a pot, just twist the pot every few days so that all parts of the rose plant gets a chance to bask in the sunshine. You can prune your rose plant now up until mid July. You said your roses are doing well in large pots so I would continue to enjoy them in containers - roses prefer rich soil with organic matter over your very sandy soil in Florida.
