Will neonicotinoids kill bees?
I purchased a plant with a tag that says, “This plant is protected from problematic aphids, white flies, beetles, mealy bugs and other unwanted pests by neonicotinoids.” Is this something that will kill bees and other critters?

Yes - it is possible that the neonicotinoids can affect bees by making them fly a bit wacko so they cannot communicate effectively with their hive members. Some environmentalists want to ban this pesticide because our pollinators are struggling due to loss of habitat and disease. Other scientists claim the good outweighs the danger to the bees and we need more flowers and more gardeners to grow them to save the pollinators. It is a rather complex problem. What we do know for sure is that the more blooming plants we all grow the better it is for all the pollinating birds, moths, bees and butterflies. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
