Trimming back clematis

My clematis got crazy last year. Can I trim it back before it starts blooming?

Yes - unless it is an early spring blooming evergreen clematis - that would be the clematis armandii. I would also recommend you wait if you have a May blooming clematis such as clematis Montana - prune these right after they flower in the spring. If you prune a June flowering clematis now it will delay the flowers for a few a few months but you will not harm the plant. The easy way to tidy up an out of control clematis is to give it the ponytail cut - grab the stems in one hand and cut two to three feet from the ground for a fresh start. If you live in an area with very cold winters wait until you see the buds sprouting with signs of new life before you prune. Now to keep your clematis tidy in the future thin or cut out a few of the oldest vines each the year and shorten any extra long vines by one half right after your clematis flowers.
