When to prune Leyland Cypress

We planted a row of Leyland Cypress for a hedge. It’s been 2 years. Is it okay to prune back the side shoots now? Thank you for your help!

Yes, this fast growing evergreen can be pruned as soon as you see new growth after planting—but if you live in an area with cold winters, I would wait until early spring to prune. This is because pruning will stimulate new growth and this fresh growth may not have time to harden up and mature before a killing frost. In mild winter areas, this is not a concern.
