Mrs Gladyce’s Question

I bought 3 tree roses this year. What lovely flowers and foliage! How do I protect them this winter? They are in large containers. Should I pull them close to the house, cover with burlap? Thank you so much for your help. Gladyce

Marianne's Response

Tree roses can be tricky and winter protection depends on where you live and how cold it gets in the winter. If you have freezing weather with snow that can stay on the ground for weeks at a time your tree roses will need to be in a greenhouse or indoor sun room. If you get some snow and it rarely drops below 32 degrees you can just pull the pots close to the house and drape the trees in a sheet or burlap only when the temps drop near freezing - do not keep them wrapped all winter as they need air circulation - just drape or cover them when really necessary. If your winters are mild, with rare snow fall or freezing you can leave your tree roses out all winter, prune them back to balls in early spring and fertilize, fertilize, fertilize all summer. Potted roses are hungry plants so I recommend an organic mulch of compost, plus Osmocote worked into the soil during the spring and a feeding of liquid plant food once a month from May until August.
