The best mulch choice should consider your climate. In the cool summer weather of the Pacific Northwest a black plastic mulch can hold in heat for an early yield but is not very attractive.  A compost or hay mulch could harbor slugs and pill bugs that feed on the fruit. I would go with a wood chip or bark chip mulch that will keep the fruit clean but still keep down weeds. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
