Marianne's Response

My African Sumac

I have a love/hate relationship with my African Sumac. I can handle the leaves that drop in the summer, but I have a question about the saplings that spring up around the tree in my yard. They are unsightly and annoying to try to remove. If I spray them with a weed killer, will it affect the rest of the tree?

It could, depending on what herbicide you use and what time of year. I would try Roundup on the freshly cut stumps on the spreading upshoots and do this in late spring when they are actively growing. The mother plant may suffer some slower growth but sounds like you will not mind slowing down this love/hate tree. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
