I am not confident that my answer is correct but my best guess is a native plant known as a Black Huckleberry (Vaccinium membranaceum) which is an unusual shrubby native that turns red to purple in the fall. Do you notice any fall berries? They can be quickly eaten by birds so watch closely as the flowers change into fruit.
