Marianne's Response
Name This Plant
I believe this is a miniature geranium but not positive. Stays short and is a good ground cover. In early summer it has small pale pink flowers on stems that are about 2”-3” tall. It doesn’t have the smell of the large scented geranium.

Yes, that is a crane's bill geranium or true geranium and it makes an excellent groundcover. There are many different varieties the most commonly sold is Johnson's Blue Geranium which is a cross of Geranium pretense. These perennial geraniums that survive cold winters are not all related to the scented geraniums or the pot geraniums you see with the big summer blooms or large rounded leaves. Those plants sold as the common geraniums are actually pelargoniums that survive for just one summer unless they are protected from the cold in a greenhouse. The common name "Crane's bill Geranium" refers to the shape of the pointed seed pod that appears after the flowers bloom. I use this perennial groundcover in my own garden around tree trunks and edging beds to keep down weeds. A close cut with the lawn mower keeps it under control and it is deer, slug and drought resistant. One of my favorites for large gardens. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
