Need Help Identifing Type of Azalea

Hi Marianne,

Can you identify the type of azalea this is? I bought it years ago. It’s turned out to be unique – at least to me – but I can’t remember what it is. I thought a type of Hinode. I also thought it had a fragrance, but it does not. Deciduous. Blooms before leafing out.

Thanks! I hope you’re enjoying the weather.

This looks like a variety of deciduous azaleas called "Northern Lights" and could be from the Exbury family or Knap Hill group of deciduous azaleas. To confirm my guess, I would try to bring a blooming branch to a meeting of the Rhododendron Society in your area. There are also some botanical gardens that specialize in rhododendrons, such as the Rhododendron Species Garden in Federal Way, WA, which could positively ID your lovely pink azalea. Not all deciduous azaleas have a fragrance, but the varieties with golden blooms seem to have the strongest scent. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
